Tennessee fire code
The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office has adopted the 2021 International Fire Code with Tennessee amendments, and the 2021 International Building Code. The International Fire Code calls for fire apparatus access roads at least 20 feet wide, and where the fire code official requires it, marked with NO PARKING FIRE LANE signs or markings.
Many larger Tennessee cities and counties run their own building and fire code programs, and they may use different editions or add their own fire lane rules. Memphis and Nashville, for example, have their own fire departments setting local requirements. Check with your local fire marshal before we stripe a fire lane, and we will paint what they require.

Memphis and West Tennessee
Memphis is one of the country's big freight and distribution hubs, with the airport cargo operations, rail yards and the Mississippi River all close by. That means a lot of warehouses and distribution centers in Shelby County and the suburbs, each with truck courts, trailer parking, employee lots and concrete floors that need lane and bay lines.
The rest of the metro has the same mix as anywhere: shopping centers, churches, schools, apartment complexes, hospitals and medical offices. Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett and Cordova have large retail and church lots. Jackson, Tennessee, east on I-40, has its own retail and industrial lots. From Ruleville, West Tennessee is close enough to plan like a Mississippi job.
ADA spaces in Tennessee
The 2010 ADA Standards apply in Tennessee the same as anywhere. Table 208.2 sets the minimum number of accessible spaces for each lot, one in six of those must be van accessible, and car spaces need a 96-inch width with a 60-inch access aisle. Signs go at least 60 inches above the ground to the bottom of the sign.
Apartment complexes and medical campuses are worth a closer look. Hospital outpatient facilities need ten percent of patient and visitor spaces accessible, and rehabilitation and outpatient physical therapy facilities need twenty percent. Older apartment lots are often short on van spaces. We check the count against the table when we lay out the lot.
