Alabama fire code
The Alabama State Fire Marshal's rule adopts the 2021 International Fire Code with Appendices B, C, D, E and M, in a revision effective January 1, 2025. Appendix D covers fire apparatus access roads. Where it applies, NO PARKING FIRE LANE signs are at least 12 by 18 inches with red letters on a white reflective background, posted on both sides of roads 20 to 26 feet wide and on one side of roads over 26 up to 32 feet.
The state rule applies to projects based on when the architectural services contract was signed, and many Alabama cities and counties adopt and enforce their own codes and fire lane rules. Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile, for example, have their own fire departments setting local requirements. Check with your local fire marshal before we stripe, and we will paint what they require.

Lots we see in Alabama
Tuscaloosa and Auburn are college towns, with campus lots, stadium parking and student apartment complexes that need clear layouts and plenty of accessible spaces. Birmingham has big hospitals and medical offices, shopping centers and churches. Huntsville has grown fast, with new offices, apartments, retail and manufacturing, and many of those lots are new asphalt that needs a full layout, not just a restripe.
Montgomery has state offices, a large Air Force base and plants nearby. Mobile has a busy port with warehouses, plants and distribution centers. Across the state, many towns have plants and warehouses with truck courts outside and concrete floors inside. Those jobs need truck routes, trailer parking, fire lanes and employee parking outside, and lane and bay lines inside. We stripe both the lot and the floor.
ADA spaces in Alabama
The 2010 ADA Standards apply in Alabama like everywhere else. A lot with 301 to 400 spaces needs 8 accessible spaces, and a lot with 401 to 500 needs 9. Above 500, it is 2 percent of the total up to 1,000. One in six accessible spaces must be van accessible, with a 132-inch space and 60-inch aisle, or a 96-inch space and 96-inch aisle.
Big campus and stadium lots are counted lot by lot, and accessible spaces should sit on the shortest accessible route to an accessible entrance. Medical lots need more: ten percent of patient and visitor spaces at hospital outpatient facilities, and twenty percent at rehabilitation and outpatient physical therapy facilities. We check the count when we lay out the lot.

Working in Alabama from Ruleville
Straight Line Services works from Ruleville, Mississippi. West Alabama is a straight run east on US 82. Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile and Auburn are farther, so those jobs are scheduled ahead. We make sure the lot is clean, dry and clear of cars when we arrive, and do any minor repairs on the same trip.
Call or text 662-719-7737, or send the form, with the town, the type of lot and what you need. We talk it through, come look when needed, and give you a free estimate before any work starts. For campus and church lots, tell us the event schedule so we can plan around it.
