Parking lots in Jackson
A hospital campus, a university or a shopping center needs lots that move traffic, keep fire lanes open and put accessible parking where it belongs. Straight Line Services stripes new or sealed asphalt, draws up new traffic layouts, and marks fire lanes and no-parking zones. Inside warehouses and plants, we stripe lane and bay lines on concrete and paint yellow safety lines along walkways and platforms.
ADA layout is a big part of Jackson work. A lot of 401 to 500 spaces needs at least 9 accessible spaces, and 501 to 1,000 needs 2 percent of the total. At least one of every six accessible spaces has to be van accessible, with a 98-inch vertical clearance along the space, aisle and route. Before paint, we can handle minor concrete and asphalt repair.

Yazoo clay and Jackson ground
Jackson is known for Yazoo clay. A 1962 Highway Research Board paper described it as very expansive, with roads and streets heaving up to about a foot and slides in cuts where the clay was exposed. The Mississippi Bureau of Geology has published a full report on it as an expansive clay. That is one reason pavement in Jackson cracks and heaves, and why a lot often needs patching before it is striped.
For land work, expansive clay means drainage and grading matter even more. Water that sits against a slab or soaks into a pad makes the clay swell. We grade so water moves away from buildings and drives, and we shape pads and yards with a laser level. For anything structural on Yazoo clay, a geotechnical engineer should be part of the plan.
Permits in Jackson
Inside the city, Jackson's Office of Code Services, through its Building Permit Division on South President Street, issues building permits. If your project is inside city limits, start there. Outside the city, check with the county your land is in: Hinds, Madison or Rankin. Each has its own process and its own rules.
Mississippi law requires notifying 811 before excavation. MDEQ construction stormwater rules apply when a job disturbs 1 acre or more, with one permit for 1 to less than 5 acres and another for 5 acres and up. The Pearl River runs along the east side of the city, with the Ross Barnett Reservoir to the northeast, so check for floodplain rules on land near the river.
